A Lecture with Smithsonian Scholar Martha Gutierrez-Steinkamp

An America 250 Town Hall Talk

Presented by The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum and sponsored by the GOLS Foundation

Wednesday, July 22

Join author and Smithsonian Scholar Martha Gutierrez-Steinkamp for an illuminating presentation on her acclaimed book, Spain: The Forgotten Alliance.

In this engaging talk, Gutierrez-Steinkamp explores Spain’s often-overlooked yet critical role in securing American independence. While France’s support during the American Revolution is widely recognized, Spain’s military strategy, financial contributions, and diplomatic efforts were equally instrumental to the Patriot victory.

Guests will discover how Spanish forces, led by figures such as Bernardo de Gálvez, weakened British strongholds along the Gulf Coast and Mississippi Valley – helping shift the course of the Revolutionary War.

Drawing on extensive historical research, Gutierrez-Steinkamp brings to life the global dimensions of the American Revolution and reveals how international alliances helped shape the birth of the United States. Attendees will gain deeper insight into the political complexities of the 18th century and the enduring legacy of Spain’s support during America’s fight for independence.

Whether you are a history enthusiast, educator, student, or simply curious about the untold stories behind America’s founding, this presentation offers a fascinating perspective on a “forgotten alliance” that helped define a nation.
