Founded in 1972, the Boca Raton Historical Society (BRHS) is dedicated to preserving, sharing, and celebrating the rich heritage of Boca Raton. As a private, nonprofit membership organization, BRHS serves as a steward of the community’s history while inspiring a deeper understanding of the people, places, and events that have shaped our city.
BRHS is headquartered in Historic Town Hall, one of Boca Raton’s most treasured landmarks. Built in 1927 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building has long served as a gathering place for the community. Today, it stands as both a symbol of Boca Raton’s past and a center for historical exploration, education, and preservation.
In November 2021, BRHS opened The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum following extensive building improvements and the installation of the museum’s permanent History Alive! exhibitions. Through engaging exhibits, educational programs, research collections, lectures, tours, and special events, the museum brings Boca Raton’s unique story to life for residents and visitors alike.
As Boca Raton’s historical organization, BRHS actively collects, preserves, and interprets artifacts, photographs, documents, and oral histories that reflect the city’s evolution from a small agricultural settlement to the vibrant community it is today. The organization also advocates for the preservation of historic resources and works collaboratively with community partners to ensure that Boca Raton’s heritage remains an important part of its future.
The mission of the Boca Raton Historical Society is to collect, preserve, and present information and artifacts relevant to the past and evolving history of Boca Raton, while maintaining a visible role in education and advocacy for historic preservation throughout our community.
To connect people to Boca Raton’s history, foster community pride, and ensure that future generations understand and appreciate the stories, places, and traditions that define our city.
