If you’ve driven past Historic Town Hall recently, you may have noticed a patriotic addition to the building’s iconic façade: red, white, and blue bunting.
While the display feels especially fitting as our nation approaches its 250th anniversary, the inspiration actually came from much closer to home. While exploring photographs in the Boca Raton Historical Society’s archives, we discovered an image of Historic Town Hall from the late 1950s proudly decorated with patriotic bunting. The photograph offered a glimpse into how previous generations celebrated civic pride and special occasions in downtown Boca Raton.
Inspired by that historic image, we set out to recreate the look and bring a small piece of Boca Raton’s past back to life.
The timing could not be more appropriate. As the Boca Raton Historical Society presents The 14th Colony, our America 250 exhibition exploring Florida’s role in the Revolutionary era, the bunting serves as a visual reminder of the traditions that have united Americans for generations.
Historic Town Hall has stood at the heart of our community since 1927, witnessing nearly a century of Boca Raton’s growth and evolution. By recreating details from historic photographs, we not only preserve memories but also help connect today’s residents and visitors with the stories of those who came before us.
We extend our sincere thanks to the City of Boca Raton for supporting this effort and helping us bring a piece of local history back to downtown Boca Raton.
The next time you pass by Historic Town Hall, take a moment to look up. You may be seeing a scene that would have felt very familiar to Boca Raton residents nearly seventy years ago.
